Goalless and boring with it

Let's not beat about the bush, this was probably the worst game I've ever seen at the Reebok. OK, in the past I've seen games were Bolton were poor and got thrashed, but I can't remember ever seeing a game where both teams were so uttertly clueless and devoid of inspiration.

The speculation before the game was all about Michael Ricketts impending transfer to Spurs - which hasn't happened as yet - and his absence from the squad altogether with a hamstring strain caused even more chatter before the game kicked off. In fact, that was the most interesting thing to talk about all afternoon. In Rickett's absence Delropy Facey was given his first start but the Bolton team was otherwise pretty unchanged from the last league game. Fulham brought a very attacking looking line up, with Malbranque and Legwinski in midfield and Saha and Sava up front. The game as a whole was a story of missed chances on both sides. Pedersen put two efforts clean over the bar from inside the area and had another tipped over. Saha had a goal ruled offside and Malbranque missed a tap in from 8 yards out. Djorkaeff turned inside the area but his shot skimmed the post. Campo failed to get on the end of a cross feet from the goal line. Gardner beat the defense at pace but his weak sidefooted shot was cleared off the line by Legwinski...

I hope you're getting the picture. Both teams could have played until Wednesday and not scored, it looked like. Despite two defenses giving them ample chances, both sets of strikers were abject. It's no surprise both teams are currently where they are in the league and it's also no surprise both have set a striker as their priority in the transfer window.
