Greaves was the manager at Bolton back when I first started watching them (yes, I am that old). He brought some very good players to the club including the iconic Frank Worthington (for the young ‘uns, think Jay Jay Okocha skill levels with a bit of Russell Brand attitude) and saw the Wanderers back from the depths of the lower reaches of English football to what was then called the First Division. Which makes him arguably as big a figure in Bolton’s history as Sam Allardyce.

Helguson Leaves

The first bit of transfer window business is a player going out, which didn’t seem to be in the plan. And it was a really good goal too. Ricardo Gardner added a second barely two minutes later and the game was over more or less as soon as it had begun. A Peter Crouch header brought Portsmouth back into contention but Jussi Jaaskelainen had a fairly easy game whereas David James in the Portsmouth goal made several first class saves to keep Pompey in it and saw a couple of shots cleared off his line by defenders. A well deserved three points which saw them go above Portsmouth into 9th place.

The goal movies are here.

No Joy at Villa

Bolton found things hard away at Aston Villa over the weekend, coming out suffering a 4-2 loss. Bolton opened the scoring with a deft flick from Elmander but then suffered a bit of a nightmare as two goals from Agbonlahor, one from Ashley Young and an own goal by Kevin Davies put Villa out of sight. Davies atoned by scoring at the right end at the death but by then the game was beyond Wanderers.

The goals are here.

OK, I Forgot

I’ve got a reason, but anyway. Bolton’s winning run came to an end last weekend at the hands of Chelsea, who won 2-0 at the Reebok. First half goals from Nicholas Anelka (had to really) and Deco saw the away side comfortable at half time and although Bolton fought back in the second half, they were unable to get anything out of the game.

And We're Going To Do It All Again

And in the kind of coincidence football sometimes throws up, Bolton have been drawn away to Sunderland in the third round of the FA Cup.
